Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide
Here are the guiding questions for this activity:
- How does the Abolition movement set the stage to the Civil War?
- The Underground Railroad provided hope and freedom to slaves throughout the South. Describe how the Underground Railroad was so effective.
- Describe the importance of immigration in the United States in the Mid-1800s. What issues did immigrants face as they came to the United States?
- Pelagie Amoureux was alive the same time that Nat Turner led a slave riot in Virginia. How did both of these African Americans, one free, one enslaved, look at slavery in the United States.
Underground Railroad Game
It is said that certain quilt designs (such as Jacob’s ladder, bear’s paw, flying geese, star/north star/evening star, log cabin and others) gave the escaping slaves explicit directions, such as 'gather the tools you want', 'we leave tonight/tomorrow' or even 'go three miles north, up the bear’s trail and then head west'. According to one theory, the knots on a quilt and the place where they were located would give specific information on how many miles to go and in what direction.
Ste. Genevieve American History II students learned about the Underground Railroad through quilt blocks!
